The Greek Revival followed the rediscovery of Greek architecture during the Grand Tour period. The first significant study of Greek architectural ruins was the 1751 expedition funded by the Society of Dilettanti of James Stuart and Nicholas Revett As a result, the Ionian style became fashionable in England and the continent.
There were two main styles, or orders, of early Greek architecture: the Doric and the Ionic. The Ionic style was used in the cities of Ionia (now the west coast of Turkey) and some of the Aegean islands. Whilst the Doric style was more formal and austere, the Ionic was more relaxed and decorative.
